Cape Hatteras, N.C.
After living in Charlotte for more than ten years, this past summer (2012) I finally made a visit to the North Carolina outerbanks area. I was able to visit both Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Island Lighthouses. Both structures were very interesting. I have always been interested by the concept of a lighthouse – providing a beacon of light to ships at sea, warning them of shore and guiding them to a safe harbor.
The North Carolina coast has many lighthouses and their unique paint schemes help differentiate them from each other. This trip inspired me to create some illustrations of lighthouses located in North Carolina. For each illustration I included some of the natural surrounding elements of each lighthouse location as well as information about each lighthouse such as the year it was built, its height and the length of the beam of light it can project.
